Bioprocessing in Biotechnology – Short Term Training Course (STTC) at KCT, Coimbatore


The Department of Biotechnology, Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT), Coimbatore, is organizing a DBT-sponsored short-term training course (STTC) for teachers involved in teaching life sciences and biotechnology for 14 days from 26 April to 9 May 2012.
The course consists of lectures by Guest Faculty from premier research institutions/universities followed by practical/hands-on training sessions in ratio of 30 : 70.
Candidates holding regular positions in private or govt-aided or govt colleges or university colleges or research institutions are eligible to apply. The application has to be sponsored by the Head of the colleges/institutions/universities. However, 25% of the teachers from govt-aided or govt colleges or university colleges will be paid TA as per institutional rules.

BIOINFORMATICS & COMPARATIVE GENOME ANALYSES

The course topics will include theoretical and practical aspects in:

  • Large-scale genome comparisons
  • Evolutionary analyses
  • Sequence and genome alignments
  • Orthologs prediction and classification
  • Genome data visualization & Next Generation Sequencing tools & analysis
Theoretical presentations will be followed by practical sessions, so that the same speaker will ensure links between theory and practice.

Reviews on each suggested topic will include their corresponding research perspectives, aiming at helping young scientists to gain insights into ongoing research in this domain.

Practical sessions in a Linux environment will involve Unix shell and Perl scripting. Students are assumed to be familiar with this environment.

Applications are invited for “Research Associate” under the J C Bose Fellowship Project of DST,Government of India.
Name of the Post : Research Associate
Qualification & Experience : Ph.D.with minimum of 55% marks in M Sc (Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, and allied areas in Biology). Those who have submitted PhD thesis may also apply. Preference will be givento those with published research work of high quality.
Salary : Rs. 22,000/-plus HRA per month.
Age : The upper age limit 35 years on 16.03.2012. A relaxation of 5 years is applicable to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC andwomen candidates.
Duration : One Year (extendable for another year, on review of performance)

Collaborative PhD studentships at Univ of Edinburgh/ NCBS Bangalore UK/ India

A four-year University of Edinburgh International PhD studentship is available from the University of Edinburgh to support an outstanding student undertaking a collaborative project between groups at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore, India and The University of Edinburgh. These fellowships are open to people of all nationalities.
The research areas available will cover multidisciplinary and systems approaches to the synaptic basis of neurodevelopmental disorders, spanning a range of experimental, computational and theoretical techniques. Specific projects will be defined by the initiatives of the applicants, and the interests of the collaborating teams. All applicants are required to write a short research proposal (one side A4 max) as part of the application (see website for details).
The project will be conducted under the guidance of a Principal investigator from Edinburgh and a Principal Investigator from NCBS. The programme of work will be based in Edinburgh but will include one year working at a research laboratory in NCBS, Bangalore, India. Current participating Principal Investigators include:

In conjunction with the COST Action Training School SeqAhead is organizing a one-day workshop on "Next Generation Sequencing: What´s Next?". The workshop will focus on future developments in NGS and point out the success the technology has in modern biology research.
The programme include 2 keynote lectures, selected oral presentations and presentations from industry and

THEME
Genomes of several plants and organisms have been sequenced, thereby resulting in the accumulation of large amount of sequence data in databases. The ‘omics’ technologies such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics, etc., are all resulting in the generation of large data sets. The outcome from all these technologies is central to the improvement of genomes of economically important crops, microbes and animals. The processing of enormous biological information generated by these novel technologies requires fast and high capacity computational and storage media. Retrieval of sequence information and analysis need sophisticated programmes which can be distributed using computer networks and world wide web. The two-days training course has been designed to provide hands-on-training on computational biology, biological databases and their role in genome annotation, in silico gene mining, gene prediction and proteomics etc.

The course will be useful to research scholars, students, and persons in their early careers in academic/research institutions and also for people engaged in the area of bioinformatics.

A 5-day workshop with hands-on training involving the following topics from molecular biology and bioinformatics. The workshop aims to equip its participants with the right kind of knowledge and tools required to practice 21st century biology.
