• Consolidated fellowship : As per terms governed by the Wellcome trust DBT India Alliance and National Institute of Immunology (a Minimum of Rs. 40,000/- per month). 
• Project title : Exploring the role of a developmental regulator in inflammatory immune response under Wellcome Trust DBT India Alliance

Essential Qualification : a. Must hold a Ph.D Degree (not awarded before 2009), or must already have submitted their thesis towards obtaining a Ph.D degree from a reputed Institute.
b. Must have more than Five years of research Experience.
c.  Must have proven research expertise/skills in basic biochemistry, cell biology and Molecular Biology, Research Expertise in in vivo animal work is also preferred.
d. Must have one publication as first author, in international journal, preferably with impact factor above 2.5.
e. Must have basic theoretical knowledge in the area such as cell signalling, inflammation, Immunology.

• Job description/Experience : The Candidate is ready to explore alteration in the host cell signalling and transcription network in response to pathogenic perturbations. The Candidate should have sound technical skills in cell culture and biochemistry and should have working theoretical knowledge in cell signalling. The candidate must have a Ph.D Degree (or must have submitted his/her thesis towards obtaining a Ph.D degree) and more than 5 years of experience in research laboratories.

Bioinformatics National Certification (BINC) Examination

JNU New Delhi, on behalf of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, will conduct the BINC examination on February 26-27, 2011. The objective of this examination is to certify bioinformatics professionals, trained formally as well as self-trained.  Registration is open from 13-12-2010 to 03-02-2011. After 5 years of conducting this examination by University of Pune, recently in 2010, JNU New Delhi has been identified as a nodal agency by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India to coordinate this examination along with six centres namely, Pune University, Pune; Anna University, Chennai; West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata; Institute of Bioinformatics & Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore; North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong and University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad. In the BINC 2009 examination, 519 candidates appeared out of which 30 candidates were certified. This year DBT has agreed to fund Research fellowships for all the BINC qualified Indian nationals to pursue Ph.D. in Indian Institutes/Universities. Note that the candidate must possess a postgraduate degree(or equivalent) & meet the criteria of the institutes/universities in order to avail research fellowship. In addition, cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- will be awarded to the top 10 BINC qualifiers.  Graduates and above in any science, agriculture, veterinary, medicine, pharmacy, engineering and technology are eligible to appear for the examination. DBT-Research Associateship 2011 Biotechnology & Life Sciences

Applications are invited from Indian nationals for the award of "DBT-Research Associateship" 2011 for pursuing research in frontier areas of Biotechnology and applied biology. The Associateship is tenable in Research Institution/Universities including non-profit R & D Institutions within India. The Associateships are awarded under a program sponsored by the Department of' Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Eligibility-:
The applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in Science, Engineering or M.D. or M.S. degree in any area of medicine with research interests in Biotechnology and Life Sciences and a good academic record. The Associateship can be availed within 3 years of the award of Ph.D./M.D./M.S. degree; however, may be relaxable in case of women (by 2 years) and in-service candidates. Those who have already submitted the Ph.D./M.D./M.S. thesis are also eligible to apply. The applicants should preferably be below the age of 40 years and 45 years in case of women candidates.

Persons already employed are also eligible to apply. However, their applications should be routed through their employers.

Details of the Award-:
The Research Associateship is a purely temporary assignment and is tenable for a period of 2 years. In exceptional cases, depending upon the progress of the research, the Associateship may be extended upto 5 years. Each fellow would be entitled to a stipend in the range of Rs.22,000-24,000 per month and a research contingency grant of Rs.50,000 per year, payable to the host Institution.

Candidates who are yet to be awarded the Ph.D./M.D./M.S. degree, if selected, will be paid Rs.18,000 per month till the award of the degree. The associate would also be entitled to HRA and other benefits as per the DST guidelines applicable to Research Associateship. The Associateships normally are not availed at the same Institution where candidates have earned their Ph.D./M.D./M.S. degree.

Candidates who are already in regular employment can avail the Associateship during the period of his/her sabbatical/study leave,in a different institute/university  


Mode of Selection-:
The candidates will be selected based on their C.V. and performance in the interview. The interview will be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in November 2010 and candidates called for interview will be paid II class railway (non-AC) /bus fare by the shortest route from their home town. If the candidate accepts the Associateship, he/she must join the host Institution/University within a month's time.

Mode of Application-:
Candidates may submit their application on plain paper alongwith bio-data, list of publications (attach reprints of 2 important papers), copies of certificates (B.Sc, M.Sc, Ph.D./M.D./M.S.), One page synopsis of Ph.D./M.D./M.S. thesis, 2 letters of recommendation (academic).

The applicant is advised to propose his/her place of work, name of the supervisor, enclose one page synopsis of proposed research which must be compatible with the on-going research of the proposed supervisor, and his/her consent for availing the Associateship. They should also enclose a declaration stating that if selected for the Associateship, he/she will complete the tenure of the Associateship.

However, they may be allowed to relinquish the Associateship only if accepting permanent employment in India. Those who had applied previously need not apply.

Bioinformatics education in India

An account of bioinformatics education in India is presented along with future prospects. Establishment of BTIS network by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India in the 1980s had been a systematic effort in the development of bioinformatics infrastructure in India to provide services to scientific community. Advances in the field of bioinformatics underpinned the need for well-trained professionals with skills in information technology and biotechnology. As a result, programmes for capacity building in terms of human resource development were initiated. Educational programmes gradually evolved from the organisation of short-term workshops to the institution of formal diploma/degree programmes. A case study of the Master’s degree course offered at the Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune is discussed. Currently, many universities and institutes are offering bioinformatics courses at different levels with variations in the course contents and degree of detailing. BioInformaticsNational Certification (BINC) examination initiated in 2005 by DBT provides a common yardstick to assess the knowledge and skill sets of students passing out of various institutions. The potential for broadening the scope of bioinformaticsto transform it into a data intensive discovery discipline is discussed. BioInformatics National Certification (BINC) Examination

University of Pune (UoP), on behalf of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, will conduct the BioInformatics National Certification (BINC) examination. The objective of this examination is to certify bioinformatics professionals, trained formally as well as self-trained.

Eligibility

Graduate in Science, Agriculture, Veterinary, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering & Technology are eligible to appear in the examination. They need not have any formal training, viz. certificate, diploma or degree in Bioinformatics. Students in final year of Bachelor’s degree are also eligible to apply.

Application and syllabus

The online application begins on 1 December 2008 and will continue until 16 January 2009. The examination fee is Rs 600 for general category, Rs 450 for reserved category and US$ 100 for foreign students. Please visit the website (bioinfo.ernet.in/binc) for detail information. Syllabus consists of four sections: biology, physical and chemical sciences, IT, and bioinformatics.

Examination

The examination is scheduled on 21–22 February 2009 and will be in three parts. The paper I will be objective type, only those who pass this paper with a minimum of 40% marks will be eligible to appear for the paper II and paper III. The paper II will be short answer type, while the paper III will be a computer-based practical. The certification will be awarded to those who secure a minimum of 40% in all the three papers.

Research fellowships will be awarded to 15 BINC qualified Indian nationals to pursue Ph.D. in Indian Institutes/Universities. Note that the candidate must possess a postgraduate degree & meet the criteria of the institutes/universities in order to avail research fellowship. In addition, a cash prize of Rs 10,000 will be awarded to the top 10 BINC qualifiers.

Biotechnology to get separate ministry in India

The government is planning to upgrade the department of biotechnology (DBT) to the status of a full-fledged ministry. At present DBT is under the Union ministry of science and technology and is responsible for promoting researches for development of genetically modified (GM) crops and other biotechnological applications in agriculture and health sciences.

Speaking at the 22nd Foundation day of DBT , the Union science and technology minister, Kapil Sibal said, "DBT is 22 years old where 27 people are working. As the 21st century would be the century of biotechnology with researches and applications being carried out across the globe, the time is ripe that DBT be upgraded to the status of an independent ministry or a commission."

He said that DBT had an annual budget of Rs 9,000 crore as compared to Rs 450 crore budget for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). He said that biotechnology had the potential for improving agricultural productivity and combating climate change. It can help in sustaining 9% growth rate in the Economy and achieving 4% growth rate in agriculture. Biotechnology had also given lot of employment opportunities to women, he said.
